A1 is another company in Slovenia to recently roll-out a 5G network In September 2021, the operator launched its 5G network in Ljubljana, Maribor and Celje - and aims to achieve 60% of 5G population coverage by the end of 2022. The operator announced that it intends to invest €100 million in its 4G and 5G infrastructure and, as part of United Group, has just contracted Nokia to provide solutions for its upcoming network upgrades. Telemach Slovenia deployed its 5G network in Ljubljana in June 2021, using its freshly acquired 3.5 GHz spectrum. When we published our previous report, only Telekom Slovenia offered 5G services on a commercial scale, but since then, two more Slovenian operators joined the fast-growing global 5G club. This recent 5G spectrum auction has helped more Slovenian operators to roll-out their 5G networks. A smaller spectrum tender will follow soon, as Slovenia’s regulator AKOS will auction a 2x5 MHz block in the 2100 MHz band, after Telemach had to forfeit it due to its competitors’ complaints about the unfairness of the award process back in 2008. The 700 MHz band licences include additional coverage obligations for major national highways and railroads. All four main mobile operators secured spectrum during this tender, with Telekom Slovenia and Telemach ending as the biggest spenders, with €52.1 million and €51.6 million offered for spectrum, respectively. The country finalized the 5G spectrum auction in April 2021, which offered frequencies across six frequency bands (700 MHz, 1500 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz) and garnered a total of €164.2 million ($195.7 million). The deployment of 5G networks in Slovenia is getting up to speed. After not winning anything in our first report, A1 takes home two joint awards, thanks to forcing two statistical ties against its competitors. The operator wins four awards outright (Games Experience, Download Speed Experience, Upload Speed Experience and 4G Coverage Experience) and shares three additional victories with its competitors. ![]() In our second report on mobile network experience in Slovenia, Telekom Slovenia dominates the table once again and is either an outright or joint winner in all the categories.
